About Me

Ignorance is bliss

I never really gave health or nutrition much thought.  I played sports after school and had a salad or vegetables now and then and I figured I was young and could eat what I wanted.  Exercise went away after injuries and a demanding engineering course load.  I got a rude awakening after college during my yearly check-up (more like multi-year check up).  At age 23 my weight was out of control and affecting my health.  My triglycerides were over the double the healthy amount and I barely had any healthy HDL cholesterol.

High risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, life long medication all within 10 years if something didn't change.  A pretty grim future and not something you want to hear at age 23.  Here I am about the start the next chapter of my life and its a grim future ahead.

A Blessing in Disguise

I was horrified at the time, but it was the definitely the best thing that could have happened to me.  It gave me the motivation to take control of my health.  Motivation to learn what I was putting into my body.  Motivation to walk/run that little bit of extra distance.  I discovered the joy of running, changed my diet, and started working out.

In just over a year I reduced my Triglycerides from over 300 to just 80.  The healthy range is from 0-149.  My BMI(Body Mass Index) dropped to 23(Normal)  from 31(Obese).  That doesn't mean I'm done.  Its really a lifestyle choice and one that I hope keeps on improving.   This blog is about all the little things you can do to improve to a healthier life.
